Optimal
Process has written software in many different languages for a variety
of platforms. But like almost all other software development firms,
we specialize in one particular platform – in our case, Microsoft
Windows, and its array of associated applications and languages. While
a number of considerations may factor into your choice of technology,
as a practical matter that choice is usually pre-determined. Unless
you are founding an entirely new business with no existing systems,
the first question any responsible developer will ask you is, “What
have you got now?”
|
|
| |
For
instance, if you are currently operating Oracle software installed
on a network with an Oracle server, you are almost certainly going
to continue developing in Oracle. Presumably, someone had good reasons
for going with Oracle in the first place but, more importantly,
changing direction now would amount to an immense undertaking. Practically
everything would have to be re-written and your staff retrained.
|
|
| |
So
if you are currently considering further development for your Oracle-based
systems, please call us – we’ll be happy to give you the
names of some reliable Oracle developers. But we couldn’t suggest
that you hire us.

OPI
has no opinion on the political and economic issues surrounding the
Microsoft Corporation’s dominance of its industry. What we do
know is that over the last twenty years or so, that corporation has
created an array of interrelated technologies that, taken together,
form a powerful system of amazing flexibility, and that the many different
components of that system work together. We also know that the system
accommodates tools developed by hundreds of other companies. And finally,
we know that Microsoft isn’t going anywhere. Its basic technology
would remain dominant even if the company itself were broken into
fifty different pieces.
|
|
| |
For
these reasons, we remain happy with our decision of about fifteen
years ago to go down the Microsoft road. As a result, OPI now has
several shelves full of DVD’s storing masses of code written
in Microsoft Visual Basic (the most widely used programming language
in the world), Visual Basic Script, SQL Server et al, code
built up out of thousands of software routines that we continually
adapt and reuse in developing new software. In addition to our experience,
this library of existing code is what accounts for our efficiency
in producing mainstream business software.

The
nature of your project, your existing systems and the capabilities
of your in-house staff should determine your choice of technology.
If your project is best suited to a language outside our area of specialization,
we will recognize the fact very quickly and tell you as soon as we
do. Often, we will be able to direct you to people with the appropriate
experience. |
